Description

The Bell Foundation is seeking an exceptional individual to become our next Chair and help lead the organisation through continued strategic development and growth. The Foundation’s vision is to create opportunities, change lives, and overcome exclusion through language education. Through our work we aim to address systemic language barriers and enable better outcomes for those children and adults who use English as an Additional Language.

Working closely with the Chief Executive and Board of Trustees, the Chair will help shape the future direction of the Foundation, and lead the Board in setting strategy, monitoring performance and ensuring that the organisation remains focused on achieving its objectives. They will act as a trusted partner to the Chief Executive, providing support, challenge and guidance for the continued development of a highly effective Board.

The Bell Foundation is seeking someone with the experience and judgement to cultivate a strong governance culture, support Trustee engagement and performance, and lead succession planning and future Board appointments. They will ensure that the Board is well positioned to provide both robust oversight and constructive strategic input as the organisation continues to grow its influence and impact.

The Foundation is particularly interested in candidates who bring a strong track record of strategic leadership gained within education and the related charitable or public service sectors or other relevant fields. Experience of chairing boards would be valuable, alongside the ability to navigate complexity, manage risk, and support organisational growth. An understanding of the education landscape, including adult education, English as a Second or Additional Language, or the role that language proficiency plays in overcoming disadvantage would be particularly welcome.

The ideal candidate will be an accomplished strategic thinker with the ability to see both the immediate challenges and longer-term opportunities facing the Foundation. They will bring intellectual curiosity, sound judgement, and the confidence to facilitate thoughtful discussion and build consensus among a diverse group of Trustees. Equally important is the ability to develop strong and productive relationships, creating an environment in which Trustees and executives alike can contribute effectively to the Foundation's mission.

This is an outstanding opportunity for an experienced leader to make a significant contribution to a respected and influential organisation. The role offers the chance to help shape the future of a charity that is transforming lives through language and education, ensuring that more people have the opportunity to thrive, participate fully in society, and realise their potential.

Term: Initial Three-Year Term, renewable once

Time Commitment: Circa 2 days per month; 4 Board meetings per year

Closing Date: Friday 11 December at 5pm
